Politics, to quote American political scientist Harold Lasswell, is “who gets what, when and how.” Politics is not external to daily life; nor is it restricted to a small group of people like the politicians or the law-makers. Politics permeates every domain of life where individuals or communities have to co-exist. We established the Department of Political Science and Public Administration at Istanbul Kemerburgaz University with such a broad and comprehensive notion of politics in mind. Our goal is to help educate individuals who can critically grasp major political ideas, processes and institutions and scientifically evaluate the causal patterns underlying all domains of politics.
Our curriculum supports interdisciplinary learning. In addition to a wide array of mandatory and elective courses in Political Science and Public Administration, our students can take elective courses from cognate disciplines such as international relations, economics, sociology, history and law. Our curriculum also embraces the principle of methodological pluralism. Throughout the four-year program, students become familiar with a wide range of research methodologies from statistical methods to comparative-historical analysis. Since the language of instruction is English, students are able to follow the latest developments and publications in their fields of interest. Students also have the opportunity to spend up to a year at one of the many European universities via the Erasmus+ program.
The educational philosophy of our department is firmly based on the notion of “student-centered learning.” Thus we strive to equip our students with the necessary tools and competencies they need to access the most up-to-date and complete information available. Our students learn to analyze the data they collect, draw independent conclusions from the analysis and present findings in a convincing manner. These abilities are transferrable beyond academia, including business or other careers that the students may follow after graduation.
The graduates of the program of Political Science and Public Administration can find employment at the government, including the Ministries of the Turkish Republic, as well as local administration, international institutions, think-tanks, civil society organizations, academia and the private sector. Our primary goal is for our graduates to become individuals that are enthusiastic to continue learning throughout their lives, remain open to critical thinking and strive to improve themselves, regardless of the career path they take.
